Army-Navy Surplus

Behind a 100-square-yard sheet of plate glass
(quite a technological feat in and of itself!)
a display is suspended:
outboard motors, lawn mowers (is that a washing machine?)
—all in camouflage—
hair dryers, river rafts, mountaineering gear.

On each end a mannequin stands,
headless, in uniform.

How do they get the caps to suspend
like that, in the air, over
where the head should be?
